Scripture:
“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15 (KJV)
Devotion:
Since, the first submission to temptation in the Garden of Eden, we, as humans have had some sort of temptation within our lives. Some our temptations are obvious to both ourselves and those around us; while some temptations are inconspicuously hidden deeply within us. No matter whether the temptation is obvious or not, temptation in itself is not a sin. If it was, then Jesus would not have led a sinless life. It was His ability to maintain His integrity when He was tempted that allowed Him to stand firm against Satan. As Christians, we must stand on the foundation established by Jesus. We are to look to his example when we are faced with temptations in our life that will cause us to behave in a manner that is not acceptable and pleasing to God. While temptation in itself is not a sin, it still should not be taken lightly. Temptation is a gateway to sin. Temptation is often strongest when we are at our weakest. Therefore, we must learn to recognize temptation and keep it in subjection to the Holy Spirit that resides within us. In order to do that, we must have the word of God within us and not allow anyone or anything to compromise our integrity.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I humbly submit myself unto you. I have been facing temptations that I caused me to be weak. But you know my heart. I admit that sometimes I stumble and fall short. I don’t want to succumb to the pressures of the world nor my fleshy desires. I want to walk right before you. I want to be set apart from those who do not know you. I want a closer relationship with you. Lord, help me to be strong with I am confronted with these temptations. Temptations that are full of deceit and false promises. I know that these temptations are designed with the sole purpose of destroying the relationship I have with you. And I refuse to let anything or anyone separate me for you and your love.
So, Rise up, oh mighty God, strike down this evil spirit that is trying to consume my thoughts and body. Make my character and integrity as strong as that of Jesus. Teach me oh Lord, how to rebuke the temptation and accept all that you have for me. It is my desire Lord to have an intimate relationship with you. Lord continue to shape me and mold me. Use me for your will and protect me from my impure thoughts. This and all prayers, I ask in the glorious name of Jesus, the Christ.
Reflection:
Life is full of temptations. These temptations are different for every individual. And when it is all said and done, we will be confronted by some sort of temptation. Sometimes, we fall short and succumb to our temptations. Does that mean that we are unworthy? I venture to say the answer to that question is, “no”. The Bible says in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. Jesus was the only man that led a sinless life. We, on the other hand, are not perfect and we come short. Our shortcomings are not justification for our sins. However, when we do fall short and we ask for forgiveness with the intentions of not succumbing to that sin again, we are able to learn and grow from our mistake. Therefore, we are stronger and more equipped to face the next temptation.
