Scripture:
O God, you are my God. At dawn I search for you. My soul thirsts for you. My body longs for you in a dry, parched land where there is no water. So I look for you in the holy place to see your power and your glory. My lips will praise you because your mercy is better than life itself. So I will thank you as long as I live. I will lift up my hands to pray in your name. You satisfy my soul with the richest foods. My mouth will sing your praise with joyful lips. (Psalm 63:1-5 GW)
Devotion:
Psalm 63 is the true epitome of what intimacy looks like. However, this is not a fly by night experience achieved with little to no effort on your part or mine. Intimacy is not spatial meaning it’s not achieved just because we run in the same circles or occupy the same space; or relational, meaning we have something in common like we work together or work out at the same gym; neither is it superficial, meaning it just looks like we have an intimate relationship on the outside to others but the heart says something totally different.
True intimacy comes not only when we become knowledgeable about who God is as he knows who we are even our thoughts afar off. But trust is the heartbeat of any intimate relationship. A disruption in trust by whatever means, causes intimacy to diminish. Rather it’s sin, infidelities, or lack of feeling secure due to life’s circumstances. When I think about trust, it means confidence in every area of life that God will do whatever he promised and we stand on that not wavering.
Reflection:
Do you long to be in the presence of God early in the morning? Do you lay upon your bed at night and just think about His goodness and his mercy towards you? Do you thirst after Him like a desert where no water is? How well do you know God, His nature, His characteristics, His promises? Based on these questions, how would you rate your relationship with God on the intimacy scale of 1-10 with 10 being very intimate?
Prayer:
O God, my God, how my entire being longs for you. I realize I am nothing without you. I pray that as I get to know you deeper and deeper and draw closer and closer to you, that you tip my intimacy scale off the charts. I pray that I will forever trust you and lean whole-heartedly on your promises never wavering regardless of what life may bring my way. For I am confident that you will always come through for me. In that mighty name Jesus, AMEN!
